Cross Cultural Women Scholars in Academe:
Intergenerational Voices
Santamaria, L.J, Jean-Marie, G, & Grant, C.M (Eds.). New York: Routledge, 2014.
This ground-breaking collection features the diverse voices, experiences, and scholarship of cross-cultural
women of American Indian, Asian-American, Black/African-American and Hispanic descent at various levels of
academe, actively engaged in the advancement of marginalised groups in the U.S. and abroad through their
scholarly work. This distinctive volume exemplifies the phenomenon of cross-cultural women scholars conducting
research and writing about ways in which they negotiate their professional realities toward professional goal
attainment. Each chapter presents rigorous ethnographic research complemented by critical analyses, reflecting
ways in which these self-determined scholars transcend barriers associated with the dynamic intersections of
race, gender, ethnicity, class and language in higher education.
Pacific Identities and Well-being:
Cross-cultural Perspectives
Margaret Nelson Agee, Tracey McIntosh, Philip Culbertson & Cabrini ‘Ofa Makasiale (Eds.). Dunedin:
Otago University Press, 2013.
This anthology addresses the mental health and therapeutic needs of Polynesian and Melanesian people and
the scarcity of resources for those working with them. It is divided into four parts – Identity, Therapeutic Practice,
Death and Dying, Reflexive Practice – that approach the concerns of Mäori, Samoans, Tongans, Fijians and
people from Tuvalu and Tokelau. Contributors include a wide range of writers, most of who are Mäori or Pacific
Island. Poems by Serie Barford, Selina Tusitala Marsh and Tracey Tawhiao introduce each section.
Making a Difference in Education and Social Policy
M. East & S. May (Eds.). Auckland: Pearson Education, 2013.
This edited volume, which contains a diverse collection of work undertaken by some of the most senior scholars
in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland, reflects what the editors see as the key missions of the
faculty: that of making a difference in education and social policy. In putting together this collection of work,
they offer insight into the many dimensions of the faculty’s research work, and the many ways in which the
faculty, through this work, encourages and facilitates educational and social change.
Peter Smith: His life and legacy in art and education
Jill Smith. Wellington: NZCER Press, 2014.
This biography is an essential read for those interested in the important role that the arts play in education,
in preserving and developing culture, and in our discovery of self and our own inherent creativity. Peter Smith
was one the most influential art educators in New Zealand. During his 50-year career he elevated the status
and value of New Zealand art education to both national and international acclaim. This book is an inspiring
account of how one teacher/artist’s journey helped change a nation’s educational landscape.
