This degree is your opportunity to become a leader in the exciting worlds of sport, health and physical
education. By choosing one of five unique pathways, you will gain specialised knowledge and skills in your
area of interest. Whether you are passionate about working with youth or promoting sport, health and
wellbeing – this is your chance to turn your passion into a career. Pathways include health education and
promotion, sport coaching and leadership, sport science, health and physical education, and dance.
Bachelor of Sport, Health
and Physical Education
Highlights
• Study across the felds of sport, health and
physical education, while also following a
specifc pathway of interest.

health education and promotion, sport
coaching and leadership, sport science,
health and physical education, or dance.
• Learn from staff who are recognised nationally
and internationally for their research,
teaching and practice in the felds of sport,
health and physical education.
• Study courses that draw on the best
international research and practice and are
also grounded in the educational, social and
cultural contexts of Aotearoa New Zealand.
In the first year you will:
• Study core topics that integrate theory and
practice in the broad disciplines of sport,
health and physical education.
• Gain experience in using digital technologies
to support and inform the work you do as a
student and when you graduate.
• Begin your focused pathway or take a range
of electives to help decide your focus from
second year onward.
In subsequent years you will:
• Take courses to further build your skills and
knowledge in your specifc area of focus.
• Undertake industry experience to support
your learning.
• Have the opportunity to study across the
University in areas such as population health,
exercise sciences, dance and other specialist
courses.
Interested in further study?
If you decide to pursue a career in teaching, you
can add a one-year teaching qualification at
graduate level, such as the Graduate Diploma in
Teaching, to become a qualified teacher (subject
to meeting entry criteria, see pg. 12-14 for
more details).

options you can develop further skills and
new knowledge to advance your interests and
undertake research.

Choose your

You will graduate with an in-depth
understanding of the latest research,
theories, ideas, concepts and practices
related to the felds of sport, health and
physical education. You will be critically
conscious of and culturally responsive to
the needs of a range of community groups,
including young people and Māori and
Pacifc communities. You will have built the
skills and understanding to be able to lead
change in communities to improve health
and wellbeing and support others to enjoy
physical activities.

depending on your area of interest.
