Foundation programmes

Our one-year foundation certificates serve a variety of purposes. Many students choose to study towards

one of these certificates to meet the academic entry requirements of our degree programmes. Others take

the certificate to gain confidence to start tertiary level study, or to have a taste of what university life is like.

If you choose the Tohu Tūāpapa Mātauranga foundation certificate, you will also develop your proficiency in

te reo Māori and your knowledge of tikanga Māori.

Where can studying a

foundation certificate take

you?

Successful completion of either of these

certifcates allows admission to the University

of Auckland for Faculty of Education and Social

Work undergraduate programmes.

You could apply for selection into one of the

following programmes:

• Bachelor of Education (Teaching) – Early

Childhood Education (ECE), ECE Pasifka,

Primary or Huarahi Māori specialisations

• Bachelor of Sport, Health and Physical

Education

• Bachelor of Social Work

Highlights

• Gain the study and learning skills, abilities

and confdence needed for successful tertiary

study.

• Learn in a supportive setting and become

familiar with the tertiary study environment of

lectures, tutorials, assignments and exams.

During the year you will:

• Be familiarised with the academic

requirements of degree study at the Faculty of

Education and Social Work.

• Develop your learning and communication

skills as well as skills in critical thinking, essay

writing and time management.

• Take courses relevant to future study in

teaching, social work or sport, health and

physical education.

Foundation Certificate Tohu

Tūāpapa Mātauranga

Highlights

• Specifcally designed as a pathway into the

Bachelor of Education (Teaching) Huarahi

Māori specialisation, enabling you to teach in

Māori medium and bilingual schools as well

as English medium primary and intermediate

schools.

• Develops your profciency in te reo Māori and

knowledge of tikanga Māori.

• Is a pathway into all other Faculty of

Education and Social Work undergraduate

programmes.

During the year you will:

• Learn in small groups in a supportive whānau

environment at the faculty’s School of

Māori and Indigenous Education – Te Puna

Wānanga.

• Develop your te reo Māori and tikanga Māori

knowledge in preparation for further study in

Māori education.

• Develop your literacy, numeracy and further

study skills to prepare you for tertiary study.

To apply for either of these certifcates, you must be a permanent resident or citizen of New

Zealand and have completed NCEA Level 2 at a New Zealand secondary school, or have a New

Zealand qualifcation equivalent to this level. If you are over 20 years of age, you can apply

without meeting these requirements. References and an interview are both parts of the selection

process.
